Bulksplit

What is Bulksplit?

A bulk shipment is an export method where many parcels are grouped together—often on one or more pallets— and sent as one consolidated shipment. Once the shipment reaches the destination country, it is split into individual deliveries, and each parcel is forwarded to its final recipient.

How it works in practice

  1. Parcels are consolidated onto one or more pallets.
  2. The pallets are transported to the destination country.
  3. The shipment is routed to a local distribution terminal.
  4. The load is split, sorted, and prepared for domestic delivery.
  5. Each parcel receives its own shipping label for final delivery.

Key benefits

  • Lower shipping costs: One consolidated cross-border shipment is typically more economical than many individual shipments.
  • Simplified customs handling: Customs clearance can be handled once for the combined shipment.
  • Less administration: Fewer documents to prepare and print compared with handling each parcel separately.
Example

If an EU-based company ships to a non-EU country such as Norway, customs is usually processed once for the consolidated shipment rather than charged for every individual parcel.

Workflow

There are two ways to work with Bulksplit in Ongoing. The easiest and most common way is to use Option 1. In both options, CMR and routing labels are generated and can be printed automatically. The Bulksplit ID is stored in the Ongoing Shipments' field Transporter consolidated Id.

Option 1: Book a bulk shipment with minimal information

  1. Book order shipments.
  2. At the end of the day consolidate orders you want to bulk into an Ongoing shipment, see Order consolidation.
  3. Enter the number of pallets, including weight and dimensions, using the Ongoing shipments waybill rows.
  4. Select a Bulksplit transport service and book consolidated shipment.

The shipment is registered and booked immediately. You do not need to provide parcel-content details at this stage.

Option 2: Assign parcels to a Bulksplit shipment (VOEC bulking)

  1. Create an Ongoing shipment for bulking.
  2. Consolidate orders you want to bulk (it's important that orders are connected to the Ongoing shipment before booking shipments for the orders).
  3. Book individual shipments for your individual parcels. The bulk shipment is registered on the first parcel booking. Each parcel is automatically assigned to that bulk shipment using the reserved Bulksplit ID stored in the Ongoing Shipments' field Transporter consolidated Id.
  4. Do steps 3 and 4 in Option 1.

This setup is mainly used for VOEC bulk shipments as the Bulksplit ID is needed for the individual parcels. Please note that it requires a stricter warehouse process. If bulk shipment data is incorrect and must be rebooked, related parcel bookings may also need to be rebooked. You may then need to transfer all orders to a new Ongoing shipment and repeat the steps in Option 2.

Note: This option needs to be activated. Contact your Ongoing representative if you want to use this setup.

General flow for both options

  1. Collect orders for the destination bulk country.
  2. Book individual shipments to end customers.
  3. Send Ongoing Bulksplit shipment at the end of the day.
  4. For both options, you must send Bring an email with the customs manifest. Speak with your Ongoing representative to set up an automated flow so the manifest is sent to Bring without manual handling. The manifest needs to be created in collaboration with your Ongoing representative.

In the Bring integration settings, select the Bulksplit terminal you want to use.

Order consolidation

To automate the process, configure order consolidation according to your warehouse flow. There is a standard Bring Bulksplit consolidator that can be used named StandardBringBulkShipmentConsolidator. Contact your Ongoing representative if you cannot find it.
