Move scanning
Table of contents
Introduction
The purpose of a move scanning is to move goods from one location to another using a hand-held unit. There are three main types, each described below.
Article based scanning
This is the most common move scanning. In an article based move scanning, the user selects which articles to move solely based on their EAN codes or article numbers. This means that it does not have traceability on each individual item, but merely on how much of each quantity is available at each location in the warehouse. The default workflow for a move transaction in such a scanning is like this:
- Scan the location which currently contains the items.
- Scan the EAN code on each article which is to be moved.
- Scan the new location. This causes the items to be moved.
- Back to step 1 to start a new transaction.

Article identification
Default: Articles are identified by their EAN codes. Another possibility is to identify articles by their article numbers instead. -
Allow moving several different articles in one transaction?
Default: Yes. -
Allow moving from several different locations in one transaction?
Default: No. -
Allow moving to several different locations in one transaction?
Default: No. -
Should the user be forced to physically scan each item he moves separately, or should he be allowed to type in the number of items?
Default: User must scan each article separately.
Serial number based scanning
In a serial number based flow, each individual item can be identified by an unique serial number. This increases traceability at the expense of efficiency. To move a particular item, the workflow is like this:
- Scan the serial number of an item.
- Scan the new location. This causes the item to be moved.
- Back to step 1 to start a new transaction.

GS1/SSCC scanning
In a GS1/SSCC scanning, each pallet is affixed with a standardized label. The label contains an unique identifying number and information about the quantity of goods on the pallet. This means that you are able to move a full pallet easily. The workflow for this kind of scanning is very similar to the serial number scanning:
- Scan the GS1 label.
- Scan the new location. This causes all the items on the pallet to be moved.
- Back to step 1 to start a new transaction.
